CAWST, the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology, is a not-for-profit, Calgary-based organization that provides training, education and technical consulting in water and sanitation to organizations working with the poor in developing countries.

Since it was formed in 2001, CAWST has helped over 3.6 million people in 66 countries get better water and sanitation. CAWST's vision is a world where people have the opportunity to succeed because their basic water and sanitation needs have been met.

CAWST believes that teaching people how to treat water in their homes is a good place to start the sustainable delivery of water and sanitation services.

To this end, CAWST has taught hundreds of organizations globally how to build and operate biosand filters. A biosand filter is a low-cost household filter that effectively treats water, reducing rates of diarrhea and other water-borne illnesses, and which can be built in diverse communities globally using local materials and labour.

CAWST's vision is a world where people have the opportunity to succeed because their basic water and sanitation needs have been met.
